Murray's Golf Guide was established towards the end of 2009.
Murray reviews all courses personally. However with so much ground to cover, ocassionally other reviewers whose opinion we value, are relied upon.
We do and photograph them as well, to give you a genuine impression rather than the frequently over-stylised images that you find on their own websites.
We do whenever possible. However some days when we visit courses are just not great for photography and woudl give a false impression of the course. In these cases we use outside photography until we have had achance to return and take our own.
To maintain our independence no golf course is ever asked for money to be in the guide. Hotels that we approve of and are happy to recommend make a small contribution to our running costs, which helps to keep our Mermbership fees as low as possible.
Put simply: because we like to do things properly and that takes time. More fully: our desire is to present our reviews in a clear, professional manner so that you may glean all the information you need quickly and easily. Reviewing a destination absorbs quite some time and expense, walking a course with a camera will typically take half a day and hotel reviews can take as long as four or five hours for some of the larger establishments.

"How good is a golf course?" is right up there with "How long is a piece of string?" when it comes to unanswerable questions. The number of correct answers is directly proportional to the number of people asked. The evening debate is half the fun of travelling to new places and playing new courses, is it not?
However, we feel that most golfers would agree that courses can be ranked into five categories that will give you a good impression of the thoughtfullness and interest of the course design. There are many styles of course: links, parkland, forest, cliff-top, target etc. indeed many courses are a combination of two or three styles, dictated by the terrain. We try hard to maintain our objectivity, having no particular favourite style (or least favourite!) and judge each course on its merits and the enjoyment and excitement it will give to visiting golfers.
Exceptional courses, worth travelling just to play them.
Very good courses that should not be missed if you are in the area.
Good courses that are enjoyable by all.
OK courses, nothing outstandingly memorable; can be a good low-pressure venue for higher Handicappers or nervous beginners (we were all beginners once upon a time!).
Cheap and cheerful courses, good for a first-day warm-up maybe, higher Handicappers or beginners
Almost too good for golf, verging on the artificial.
High quality maintenance, crisp borders between Green and fringe, Fairways and rough, smooth Greens, raked bunkers.
Good general standard of maintenance, well tended.
A little untidy in places.
Bring a mower.
Our Clubhouse ratings have nothing to do with style: although we have a slight bias towards the traditional style Clubhouse, there are many modern (or modernised) Clubhouses where we would be happy to analyse a round with our favourite tipple. Ratings have more to do with comfort, welcome and facilities.
Everything you could dream of.
Everything you could wish for.
Everything you need.
Quite a few things.
Not a lot.
Please click below to e-mail us your question, we shall reply and post both Q&A under FAQs.
Just let us know and we shall try and move your request up the list of forthcoming reviews.
Murray has been involved in golf for twenty years travelling throughout Great Britain, Europe, America and Africa reviewing and photographing golf courses and hotels for an exclusive golf tour operator.
